Story time at BookPeople
Today’s giveaway is from BookPeople of Moscow, an awesome independent bookstore in Moscow, Idaho. BookPeople’s mission is to serve readers and writers of all ages with a handpicked selection of great books, a variety of events, and an inspiring place in which all are welcome.
BookPeople is celebrating its 40th year in business – the store has been open since 1973. When longtime owner Robert Greene retired in 2011, the Moscow community banded together to keep the store from closing. Steffen and Nicole Werner and Walt and Carol Spurling bought BookPeople in December 2011, and thanks to a huge swell of community support and a lot of elbow grease, BookPeople reopened in February 2012.
My talented friend Jesica, who I’ve known since we were teenagers, is in charge of bespoke gift boxes at BookPeople. This is a new service the store will soon start offering – they’ll ship custom collections of books anywhere, for any occasion. Customers can select a theme; the store will suggest the perfect books and gifts to go with it; and the customer can then hand-pick exactly what goes in the box. Co-owner Carol Spurling says the themes will include “the ‘new baby’ box, the ‘newlywed’ box, the ‘high school or college grad’ box, the ‘itchy feet’ box, the ‘midlife crisis’ box, the ‘breakup’ box, holiday-themed boxes for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s and Father’s Day, and several others.” The service will launch this summer. Customers can order online, in person, or on the phone. Keep checking BookPeople’s website for updates on this amazingly cool-sounding idea, and, of course, I’ll keep you posted here, too.

Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester, illustrated by Lynn Munsinger
My favorite children’s book of all time would be “Charlotte’s Web”. I just finished reading “The Story of Charlotte’s Web: E.B. White’s Eccentric Life in Nature and the Birth of an American Classic”. I have always loved the simple story of a spider and a pig and a barnyard and now I have some idea of how E.B. White developed the story over the course of his lifetime. I was an elementary school teacher for 33 years and always read the book to my class. It taught them to value and respect every life, accept those who are different, and to be kind – important values for a lifetime.
“The Conch Bearer” by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
For 8 or 9 years I have loved “Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch. I gave that book to my daughter for a baby shower gift. And, she has given it many times since.
Our favorite children’s book right now is “Good Night Gorilla” by Peggy Rathmann. Our almost two-year old loves to read it before every nap time and bedtime! The illustrations are wonderful. We talk about the animals, look for the mouse with the banana on every page, wonder who’s eyes are bright on the black out page after the lights are turned off, and giggle at the sneaky gorilla. It’s a wonderful book and time together as a family.
Our favorite kid’s book for our three-year old is “I Love You Because You’re You.” It’s a good reminder for her that we will always love her, no matter what. No matter how she feels (happy, sad, silly, scared), we love her because she is just her. And the illustrations are adorable!

My favorite children’s book of the moment is “The Lorax.” Of course, everyone loves Dr. Seuss, but the story of The Lorax wasn’t one I heard until about a year ago … and I think it is most certainly the most important book ever written by Dr. Seuss as it has such a positive message that becomes more relevant to our society by the moment. I hope that the message this book holds is one parents are teaching their children everywhere, and if it’s by using The Lorax, even better!
Yay for BookPeople! One of my favorite picture books is Paul Fleischman’s Weslandia. Last middle-grade book that I read and loved is Clare Vanderpool’s Navigating Early.
