sorry, ma (2)

Last night my sister-in-law called me, put me on speakerphone, then the phone broke somehow. I hung up and waited for her to call back. When she didn’t, I star-69ed her. It told me I was out of the coverage area to do that. I looked up her cell number in my phone book, and called. A guy picked up who sounded like her boyfriend. “D?” I asked.
“What?”
“Is C there?”
“Who?”
“C.”
“There’s no C here.”
“Oh. Sorry, I guess I have the wrong number.”
“Yeah, sorry ma, you got the wrong number.”
“OK, bye.”
I’ve always wanted someone to call me “ma.” Seriously. I am a sucker for hip-hop sounding pet names for girls. I wish someone would call me “mami,” or “shorty.” “Girl,” is good too, even if it is delivered all shriekily and drag-queenily. And English guys call you “darlin’,” which is great. I don’t want O to call me those things, because it would be kind of unnatural and wigga-ish-sounding, and besides, he never uses those words. But if some dude is passing me on the street, and I drop my handkerchief and he picks it up and hands it to me, and I say thank you, and he says “No problem, ma,” I would absolutely love it.
I never did get to talk to my sister-in-law. Call me, ma!
